Convicted Squirrels: 10,000 NFTs on a complete minting stack

For the Convicted Squirrels collection, CPI Technologies delivered the entire technical foundation: ERC-721 smart contracts on Ethereum, a custom minting web app with wallet connection, decentralized artwork storage on IPFS, and the programs behind an active collector community – plus the creative production, from the generative art system to animated content.

The starting point

Standing out in a saturated market

In 2021, hundreds of new NFT collections launched every week – most of them with no concept beyond the artwork. This project needed a story with legs: 10,000 squirrels convicted without a fair trial – minting one means posting its bail. Every NFT is a mugshot with its own offense, generated from hand-drawn traits.

Behind the narrative, the technology had to hold up: smart contracts for minting and distribution, a sales flow built to survive the launch rush, safe storage for the artwork, and tooling for the community. On top of that came content production – screenwriting and animation as long-term utility for holders.

Our approach

Story, art pipeline, and a custom mint stack

The generative system combines hand-drawn traits – expressions, accessories, outfits, and the offense board – into 10,000 characters, each of which exists exactly once. The finished artworks live on IPFS instead of a single server.

Minting and distribution run through a custom ERC-721 contract written in Solidity on Ethereum. Sales happened directly on the project website: a web app with wallet connection and a countdown to the public launch – no third-party platforms in between.

Alongside the build, we marketed the launch and grew the community – including holder programs like “Sharing the Soap”, which gives collectors a share of the monthly trading volume, and priority access to upcoming drops.

The building blocks

From art system to community program

Six components, one project: creative production and blockchain infrastructure from a single team.

Generative art system

10,000 unique characters generated from hand-drawn traits – every combination exists exactly once.

ERC-721 smart contracts

A custom Solidity contract on Ethereum handling minting and distribution – unchanged on-chain to this day.

Minting web app

Sales straight from the project website: connect a wallet, mint, done – with a countdown to the public launch.

IPFS storage

The artworks are stored on IPFS, keeping them reachable independently of any project infrastructure.

Community programs

Holder incentives like “Sharing the Soap”, sharing monthly trading volume with collectors, plus priority access to new drops.

Story & animation

Original screenwriting and animation production: exclusive animated content as utility for NFT holders.

The outcome

Strong traction and a community spin-off

The September 2021 launch brought in over 2,100 NFT sales and around $250,000 – beyond the original funding target. Holders received exclusive animated content tied to their squirrels.

Community demand was strong enough to justify a second collection: the “Zombie Squirrels” spin-off followed.

Years after launch, the collection still runs without any central infrastructure: the contract sits unchanged on Ethereum, the artworks live on IPFS, and trading happens on marketplaces like OpenSea – exactly how decentralized systems are supposed to work.
